Journal by Gabriel Martinez

A few months ago I was lucky enough to visit Helsinki for their “Design Week”. The experience was short but intense. In Finland the word design is “superficial”. You can come across it at street level: city streets, subtly dressed, detailed shop fronts. Due to the quality of their displays, some shops looked more like contemporary design museums.

The different activities were enriching. The visits to the designers’ studies allowed the discovery of their kindest side. The Pecha-kucha monologues gave the event a warm and enjoyable touch. Personally, I was also able to enjoy the company of Pekka Loiri, who together with Kari Piippo is one of my favourite Finnish graphic designers.

I sincerely believe that today Finland has very interesting and attractive design. And it is fortunate that Madrid has realised this and has made it more accessible for us.
