Just like contemporary art itself, the 11th collection exhibition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma is open-mindedly crossing all kinds of borders. The leading role is given to the artist as well as to the viewer. It’s a Set-up is about the experiential and participatory aspect of art, and considers such themes as time and duration, the presentation and staging of artwork, performance and human relationships. The exhibition showcases various works and techniques from 41 artists. Some of the works encourage the viewer to use other senses than those of sight and hearing and attempt to enhance the viewer’s experience of the artwork.

The Iraqi-Finnish artist Adel Abidin is a rising star in international contemporary art. His first major solo exhibition, held now in Kiasma, presents the artist’s recent work, most of which consists of video installations.

The works encourage us to reflect on culture, both our own and other people’s. In his art, Abidin focuses particularly on “themes such as cultural alienation and marginalization”. The works address issues such as experiences of exclusion, gender roles and sexuality, and also life, death and the insanity of war. Central to all of Abidin’s works is his use of black humour and irony.

One of the works is a large neon sign derived from the Coca-Cola logo, which Abidin presents in a mirror image. It is a reference to a rumour that made the rounds some time ago at certain Islamic websites, according to which the sign says, in Arabic, No Mohammed, No Mecca. But the artist gives the mirror image another interpretation. According to him it says To Mohammed, To Mecca. The story behind the work is an urban legend from the Arab world, which has been discredited both by the Coca-Cola Company and authorities in the Muslim world.

THE INVISIBLE CITY EXHIBITION
The Invisible City project explores the city not just as formed by physical space, but also as a collective construction, made up of the memories, desires and experiences of its inhabitants.

The city should not be conceived as a unit but rather as the sum of its inhabitants’ multiple points of views which, all combined, create a multi-faceted perspective. Thus, the city is an aggregation of public and private spaces, from which emerges a shared identity allowing us to live in it.

This project consists of a series of events, including a film screening accompanied by a live soundtrack, a workshop in public space, and an exhibition featuring work by visual artists from Barcelona (some of them artist residents or former residents from HANGAR visual arts production centre).

These events will explore different forms of exchange and interaction between the city and its inhabitants. We will look into the perception and identity of contemporary cities, and at how art can influence their transformation, asking: Do we live in a real city or in the mirage of what it should be?
